Salmon Fishing
The best time to catch & eat salmon, is in the spring. From March until June, our salmon are silver & have a lovely pink/orange meat. After the ice goes out (if we have any), the surface water temperature is 32 degrees. Water at it's most dense, is just over 39 degrees. Although this isn't much warmer than 32, it is warmer, & the salmon tend to seek out this warmer water. Owen Sound bay is very deep. At Thompson's hole, the depth is about 110' deep less than a mile from shore. The dense water sets up at about 80', so most of the salmon are in this area & some days it is like fishing in a barrel!!!!!! The water warms up quickly, at the edges & on the surface, so the salmon don't stay captive for long. Later in May & June, we have to go out of the bay searching for them. They are still nice & silver, & great to catch & eat, just a little harder to find.

Through the summer, fishing is good further out of Owen Sound bay. Vail's Point has a good shoal as does Sutton Point to Cape Commador. Fishing Colpoy's Bay, around the Islands & out of Lion's Head are also gread summer fishing spots.

Early August, the salmon start coming back to Owen Sound. The 4 year olds are here for their final chapter to spawn & die. This is also a great time to tie into a 20 lb + fish that fights like a freight train & that my words won't suffice. You have to catch one for yourself to know what I am talking about!! These fish are a more olive green in colour now, but still great to catch & eat. Did I mention you can eat the fish you catch here in Owen Sound. Well, you can & you will enjoy.

Salmon fishing carries on through most of October when most salmon are then up the rivers spawning. So, if you're looking for a great fishing trip, come on up to Owen Sound Bay & check out SilverHook Charters. (jthompsn@bmts.com or 519 371 1928)
